"Diego"
sharing his home with Randy C. and family in Arnold MD

Have you ever looked for a parrot that hangs upside
down from one toe, flips on his back and can be spun like a top, and yet
tell you, I LOVE YOU? How about a parrot that is so ornery that when you
play ball with him, sometimes he’ll throw it back to you and sometimes he’ll
stare you in the eye and toss it behind him? How about a parrot that will
stand like a statute when a stranger enters the room and then scare that
stranger by saying in a very LOUD voice, HI! HOW ARE YOU? And how would you
like a parrot that is 29” long to the tip of his tail who climbs into your
shirt, thinking that he is hiding when you can still see half of him?
Look no further, I have such a parrot. His name is
Diego and he is a Military Macaw that just turned 4 years old in May. Diego
is full of life, comical, loveable, adorable and BIG. His beak can break
open Brazil nuts and yet he is ever so gentle when preening my moustache,
eyebrows and my hair. He loves to play on the floor and crawls under me and
rests his head on arm while snuggled next to my head.
Yes, he is messy. My gosh he goes through wood toys
like they were made of paper and he has chewed up the molding I have around
the closet door and the parrot boarder that runs behind his cage and I have
a piece of acrylic above his cage so he can’t chew the ceiling tiles. (which
he did before I had it up there). And don’t sit him down on a dining room
chair that’s wood, but he does well on sofas and cloth chairs.
They say to be loved by a macaw is so unlike being
loved by any other parrot and since I own another parrot and have owned
other parrots, I can honestly agree. Diego is like a small lap dog.
The biggest challenge is getting over the
fear of the beak and if you approach Diego with confidence he will reward
you with love.
