Common Hazards
Rope & Cord
The 2 most common problems are strangulation &
entanglement
both are easily
avoidable. Know your Bird and their play habits!
Keep all cords and ropes cut short enough so they can not create a noose
around
the birds neck,
(the thinner the rope, the shorter it needs to be). Fraying rope and
cord
are also dangerous because
your bird may become caught in them, resulting in
death or injury.

Strings and
Threads
Many toys our birds love to play with (even
their favorite household items) may
contain
fine string or threads. These should always be used as an out-side of the
cage toy,
with supervision. Even then, according to how some birds play, these
may
need to be avoided!
Check All Toys Daily
Fabrics
Fabrics can be hazardous to any bird,
especially smaller birds with fine toe nails.
All fabric toys should be used as "Out of the Cage" toys. Cotton fabrics are
woven
threads
that will unravel and easily become tangled around your birds toes & feet.
You won't even notice this until swelling has occurred & by then it can be
too late.
Use extra caution with all fabrics
including your cage covers
Metals
The most common Quick link used by most Bird
Toy Manufacturers
is zinc plated.
Much of the chain used is also zinc plated. If the
manufacturer does not specifically
state otherwise, you should replace
these links with a new one or remove it.
Cages, Bells, Pear links and other metals products are commonly painted or
plated
in a variety of coatings. These are safe as long as your Birds do not like
to chew on
metal
and you keep an eye on them for wear. Some birds are more fascinated with
the link
than they are the toy. In these cases, only Stainless Steel should be used.
These birds will quickly remove the coating and be exposed to the metals
beneath.
All metals should be checked
regularly for wear & oxidation.
Cages should be refinished as the paint or plating wears off.
.
Flavored Toys
In the recent years, many toys have become
available that are flavored.
The purpose,
of course is to attract the birds to play with them.
The problem here is that it may
also encourage your bird to ingest them.
NO Non-Food item is safe to ingest!
I would advise avoiding
these flavored toys altogether
Baby Birds
Safety Tip
Baby Birds who are weaning are more likely to choke or swallow
a non-food item
than adult birds. They tend to bob (as if being fed)
when they get excited & can be
easily startled.
Sometimes they have not yet learned to distinguish non-food
from
food due to the fact that they are hand fed rather than parent raised.
It is important
to give baby birds a wide variety of toys
(both in colors & textures)
but be aware
and cautious of easily destroyed toys
until your baby is well past the weaning stage
REMEMBER
No toy is 100% safe
