General Play Behavior for Cockatoos
(complied over more than 10 years of play
behavior studies & research) |
|
I believe the Cockatoo is probably the most accomplished player in the
parrot kingdom.
Generally, (at least with the larger Toos), their approach to toys is
not primarily destruction, but rather a "what does this do?" or " how
does this come apart?" approach.
Often they will use their toys as tools, in order to scoop up a
sip of water or to clean their beaks after a yummy snack.
They can dissemble anything without breaking a single part if they
choose too.
They will weave or unweave what ever can be woven & they have mastered the
art of untying knots on anything.
There is very little a Cockatoo won't find an interest in but VARIETY is
key.
In order to keep these birds properly stimulated they must be given, not
only a tremendous variety of textures but also a tremendous variety of
styles in their toys.
In general the Cockatoos love the colors Red, Purple & Yellow but all
colors are intriguing.
Foot toys are usually a favorite with most Cockatoos and should be offered
in abundance.
Foraging toys are also an important part of keeping these birds properly
stimulated.
Whether it's a little surprise hidden inside a little toy or a tasty treat
hidden somewhere in their cage, foraging is an effective & affordable way
to relieve frustration & boredom.
Big bell toys as well as swings, bouncers & boings are also a must.
Cockatoos love soft fabrics and their overwhelming desire to snuggle means
they
will generally love a birdie bed or at the very least, something soft to
cozy up too.
