General Play Behavior For Quakers
(complied over more than 10 years of play
behavior studies & research) |
|
Quakers are in a class all their own when it comes to "play behavior"
Many are quite playful until about the age of 2, then they can easily turn
into perch potatoes.
Generally Quakers are not very destructive but there are several things
they all usually enjoy, such as
weaving & decorating their cages.
Quakers should always have weaving materials available to them such as
thin strips of leather,
cane, thin twigs, etc., anything that can be
easily manipulated thru the bars of the cage or other toys.
Hanging toys, should be hung on bars that will allow your bird to slide it
forward or backwards into the position your Quaker chooses.
Good choices in toys are ones with buttons or little nubs or things to
pick & pluck off.
Also things that will jingle while they fight with it, a type of tug a war
game,
a favorite game with QP's.
Most Quakers love the noise of crispy cellophane & paper. Soft fabrics, balls and toys with moving, clinking
parts are also good choices.
Most QP's
become very aggressive & protective of their "stuff".
When you clean your Quakers cage try not to disturb the basic toy
arrangement
or any weavings that are in progress.
They work so very hard to get
everything just "perfect" (for them)
and the average Quaker doesn't like change at all and
no one enjoys a
cranky Quaker.
Quakers also love a special place to stash a new found treasure or put a
favorite toy or part so foraging cups, little baskets or toy boxes would
be a good choice.
Color can be a very important issue with QP's, many hate red but love
yellow & purple.
You need to do some experimenting to see if your Quaker has any
preferences or aversions
to any particular color.
The average adult Quaker isn't overly fond of foot toys but younger birds
are.
Little foot toys
should be encouraged regardless
Although Quakers don't usually care for birdie beds, they generally will
love a
Chopper's Flop House (above) or something similar to sleep underneath.
