General Play Behavior of the Pionus
(complied over more than 10 years of play
behavior studies & research) |
|
The Pionus parrot is not a rambunctious player, as so many other
parrots are.
They love toys but their approach & behavior with
toys is in a class by
itself and is
sometimes unfortunately mistaken
as a lack of interest in toys.
Generally the Pionus will prefer small,
easy to shred or chew, toys. In most cases they will take their own
sweet time examining every nook &
cranny of a toy
from afar
before even approaching it, let alone destroying it.
They love all
sorts of different textures and are very easy to please.
Moving
parts such as cords that pull back & forth thru the toy or small
parts
that can be easily removed will be greatly enjoyed.
Generally they like to hold a part of the toy in their foot while playing,
so loosely hanging toys
are a good choice as well as foot
toys for these parrots.
If you are having trouble encouraging your Pionus to play, try hanging
his/her toys at perch level,
rather than overhead.
Remember to keep them small & interesting,
lightweight & easy
to grasp.
A basket of small foot toys is another good choice to
encourage playtime
for these birds.
Soft or crunchy textures as well
as thin wood pieces will usually
keep the
Pionus entertained for
hours.
As a rule, the Pionus isn't overly excited with bells (loud ones) but they do enjoy
hanging upside-down & swinging
from their toys.
Boings, Bouncers & Swings are a good choice for the mature,
more
sure-footed Pionus
(younger birds will prefer stationary places to play)
Color doesn't seem to be a factor for these parrots one way or the other
but if you are
trying to encourage play, you might want to
try blues,
greens, yellows or even natural.
Although the average Pionus may not take interest in birdie beds or
sleepers,
they do take comfort in something soft & cozy to sleep
next to at night.
