General Play Behavior For Macaws
(complied over more than 10 years of play
behavior studies & research) |
Those Beautiful Macaws, they will rip through a $50 toy
in what seems like just minutes.
Or, maybe your Macaw, will scissor through where the toy hangs from the
cage bars
just to
watch it fall to the floor, and then ignore it.
I'm not sure how, when or why it started, but somewhere along the way,
someone
decided that Macaws needed toys that are 2 to 3 times their body size.
Our studies have revealed however, that much of this destructive
behavior
isn't healthy play behavior, but rather an aggressive attempt
to rid their cage
of what he/she perceives as a threat, a predator or
intruder.
Our belief is that these toys are really not designed with the purpose
of stimulating and entertaining the parrot ...but more for a nice
decoration in those huge cages.
These larger toys, are after all just a collection of smaller toys
strung together, and taken individually, they could be of more mental
benefit!
I know these big beaks are powerful but it is important not to let your
Macaw fall into the "wood" rut. Because these giant, basically wood toys
may be perceived as an intruder,
your Macaw may destroy the toy as rapidly as possible just to be rid of
it!
Once your bird has mastered the art of making toothpicks, the mental
stimulation is lost.
A toy really should not be about how long it lasts, but rather the
mental stimulation
each toy can give your parrot.
Be certain to offer your Macaws lots of smaller textured toys in great
variety even though
they may only last hours or even minutes, the mental stimulation
gained
will be far more beneficial to your parrots mental well being.
In the long run you will find that your Macaw will start investigating &
experiencing
each new toy instead of just attacking it with mindless demolition.
Besides a variety of shredding toys, manipulating toys are a good
choice, such as
nuts & bolts and weaving toys. Foraging toys are also good to keep them
stimulated.
Foot toys should be encouraged especially when your bird is out of the
cage.
Most Macaws love big plastic chains to hang and swing from.
Ball toys that can be tossed, rolled & chased are usually a big hit.
Boings, swings or bouncers should be standard for all Macaws.
Macaws are not usually fond of birdie beds but there are always
exceptions
