Is plywood safe for our birds?
The common answer is NO
I did some research on this product and I found some very interesting
things that I would like to share.
You be the judge
I
Bum Rap or Bad News?
Formaldehyde is found in nature almost everywhere. It is in our foods
(fruits & veggies) & even in our air.
It is also present in many
materials such as plastics, carpets, fabrics,
The toxicity issue with the formaldehyde adhesives used in the
production of plywood was, the "Off-Gasses". The gasses given off by
formaldehyde were causing allergies, not illness, to be a
problem for some people. Years ago, the plywood industry was forced by the
FDA, to start using a more stable formaldehyde adhesive, which gives off a
minimum of off-gas. This new adhesive is inert when dry & basically
creates a plastic layer bond between 2 woods or veneers.
So, is plywood safe for our birds to chew or not?
I'd have to say that the most compelling evidence to me is that about 90% of all
breeder boxes &
bird houses are made of plywood & have been for many
years!
Since so many breeders and babies have been raised in nest boxes made of
plywood,
if off gassing were a problem, we would have seen the effects
before this.
Nest boxes are a small, not well ventilated place, surely the babies would
be effected if there was a problem
Breeders certainly would become ill regularly if chewing on the plywood was a problem
So What Do You Think?
has plywood received a bum rap?
